The BMW 320i Racing was developed to run the races of the 1977 World Championship for Makes and Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM). Based on the 1975 release 320i two-door sedan, this Group 5 race car employed a 300hp, 1,998cc inline-four DOHC engine and its significantly modified body featured a powerful form with front and rear overfenders and large rear wing; the modifications also gave it further lightness. The BMW 320i Racing made its debut in the opening race of the 1977 World Championship for Makes, the 24 Hours of Daytona, piloted by drivers including Ronnie Peterson, and its heated rivalry in the 2-liter class with the Porsche 935 would continue.
